Ho Hummin' It

The default around here for any fishing time: good. However, it's been a moon or so it seems since anything particulary interesting has gone down in the way of trout adventure. Not catching big fish and not getting into prolific or even well-defined hatches. That's in part because I'm not getting out a hell of a lot.

And so here was a tide-over, defaultish, decent day: good weather and good company on beautiful water. Our share of small fish were caught on various dry flies. Not one fish >11 inches was hooked or landed, as far as I could tell.

And one other thing: I am an old bastard. I used to be able to fast and go without water for a long while when fishing... In this case: roughly 7 AM to 220 PM with nary a sip or bite... and it did me in. Aches, dizziness, rocking stomach, etc. hit me as evening came on. Some might call it brazen stupidity but I call it being too busy and enraptured to pay attention to food and water. Even on a ho hum day.

Other notes:
Bugs observed: stoneflies, craneflies, gray caddis, small mayflies.
Fish ate skittered caddis sporadically... they ate some dead-drifted mayflies - both traditional hackle and small parachutes.
Got a number of fish to eat olive streamer.
Never caught a fish nymphing and really didn't nymph much at all.
Our first stop was a bust: it'd been on my exploration list for a long time... checked it out, but jumped in just upstream of a HI reach and went the wrong way... a whole lotta shallow, wide water with no fish. Pays to look at maps before you go out instead of relying on vague and fuzzy recollections.
Second stop was good: on way in, we say one group of two, fishing upstream... we went down... on the way out, there were four more cars parked and a number of folks crawling about.
