I feel like should know what book this is. Can't quite place it.
But very nice piece there.
You might find the Ted Nugent Books Mitch has been reading interesting.. Not necssarily that I myself, or others, agree with all of his ideas... But when it comes to time in the wild, the great reward of collecting your own food, etc... It's pretty good.
I've only read bits & pieces, hopped around to chapters of inerests. When it comes to food - I think that anyone who eats should read what he has to say.
And he's just plain funny sometimes, has a very entertaining writign style.
Thsi peice reminds me of young Ted, though... how when his friends were getting high in the 60's, he took off for the woods. It's good stuff.

The citation is from a novel (or maybe novella, or maybe a story) called Fidelity, by Wendell Berry. It's an account of the last days of Burley Coulter... and how after his connection to "life giving machines" in a hospital, he is "kidnapped" by his family and membership and taken home. This particular text is looking back on Burley's life.
The only time I hear about Nugent is when the subject is NRA. I don't know much about him. Sounds like an interesting read.
This text is a more elegant statement of what I tried to write a couple posts prior to this one... A person has to get away sometimes. Here, Burley left for days... in an abbreviated but still valuable version of this today, a person can achieve good recharge with half a day on a stream or even a few hours staring at some fish.
I'm not a big NRA fan, myself, (I hate NRA junkmail, and wish never to be a member.) Ted Nugent is an active member, though, and I feel it's too bad he is so recognized for it. It kind of gets in the way of people being open to hear what he has to say... which is a lot on a wide variety of things, and often pretty good.
I did some more reading in his book Ted WHite & Blue just this weekend while doing some flying, and ariport sitting. The introduction, writeen by another guy, was a pretty good read in itself.
I don't like the NRA much myself. However, I would never push for any sort of gun ban either. Like most issues, discussion of gun control has unfortunately gone the way of extreme polarization: "you're with us or against us," etc. The "middle voice" is rarely heard, and gets no public air time. Sensibility is not as dramatic I guess.
