Been mourning the coming deep freeze and wallowing in the non-trout-season that is now. To support this self-woe and further prop it up, I've been reading over and over the following poem, and looking forward to the day that will allow a person to put boot on a stream.

Song of the Brook

I come from haunts of coot and hern,
I make a sudden sally
And sparkle out among the fern,
To bicker down a valley.

By thirty hills I hurry down,
Or slip between the ridges,
By twenty thorpes, a little town,
And half a hundred bridges.

Till last by Philip's farm I flow
To join the brimming river,
For men may come and men may go,
But I go on for ever.

I chatter over stony ways,
In little sharps and trebles,
I bubble into eddying bays,
I babble on the pebbles.

With many a curve my banks I fret
By many a field and fallow,
And many a fairy foreland set
With willow-weed and mallow.

I chatter, chatter, as I flow
To join the brimming river,
For men may come and men may go,
But I go on for ever.

I wind about, and in and out,
With here a blossom sailing,
And here and there a lusty trout,
And here and there a grayling,

And here and there a foamy flake
Upon me, as I travel
With many a silvery waterbreak
Above the golden gravel,

And draw them all along, and flow
To join the brimming river
For men may come and men may go,
But I go on for ever.

I steal by lawns and grassy plots,
I slide by hazel covers;
I move the sweet forget-me-nots
That grow for happy lovers.

I slip, I slide, I gloom, I glance,
Among my skimming swallows;
I make the netted sunbeam dance
Against my sandy shallows.

I murmur under moon and stars
In brambly wildernesses;
I linger by my shingly bars;
I loiter round my cresses;

And out again I curve and flow
To join the brimming river,
For men may come and men may go,
But I go on for ever.

Thanks for that, Wendy. After that mild, idyllic November, the other shoe is now dropping with a sickening thud. I have leeks now frozen in the ground. I still have a couple of trout in the freezer from the last days of September. I'm going to thaw them out and cook them up this week, and while I eat them I'll think of you, and of Lord Tennyson. Cheers~ Brett

I wanted to name one of our kids Tennyson. (it was an idea, anyway. Shot down.)

Glad you both enjoyed the poem.

Would nick name by Tenny? Kind of cool. Which kid though? Hard to imagine now.

TC: I was picking some late fall lettuce from a cold frame there for a while, but the hard freezes have done it in. No more. Still some trout in the freezer though. Maybe I'll do some thawing and cooking too - good idea.

That's a cool poem. Maybe we could put some chords to it. I could see Frodo and Sam singing that one.

Perfect call there. It has The Shire written all over it. Do put some chords to it when you get a chance.

I am in MI and our snow is here. I love the Holidays and then I use the winter months to focus on my flies and art.
